NW taxi operators commit to reshape the industry through Taxi Lekgotla

Mahikeng - The North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari acknowledged the commitment made by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Province to actively participate in the Provincial Taxi Lekgotla that is set to professionalize the industry as an positive contribution to the economy.

MEC Lehari welcomed the commitment when he launched the Provincial Taxi Lekgotla through a Public Discourse at the Disaster Management Centre, Mahikeng. He said it is about time the taxi industry plays a full active role in the economy of the Province and the Country at large.

“There was a time when the taxi industry was regulated and this Lekgotla is a necessary intervention to professionalise the industry which is overdue. The journey will not be easy but we must all play our roles to change the industry,” said Lehari.

Committing the taxi industry, SANTACO Provincial Chairperson Serame Sebego said they will take advantage of the Lekgotla to reshape the taxi industry to regain its identity and move towards providing professional transport services to the commuters and communities.

Speaking during the Provincial Taxi Lekgotla Public Discourse, Sebego said this is an opportunity to reengineer the industry. “This intervention comes at the right time for us to regain our identity and return the taxi industry where it should be.
Through this Lekgotla, we must change the behavior and perception that we are unruly and will do so by keep supporting all government initiatives to improve the taxi industry,” said Sebego, who pleaded with the government to keep supporting the industry.
Ms Sinah Mongalo, the Provincial Chairperson of the SANTACO Women Desk also appealed to the government to capacitate women in the taxi and transport industry at large.

Ms Mongalo said the instability in the taxi industry is due to fraudulent operating licenses, operators with multiple licenses, dual membership and too many associations in the Province.

She called on the urgent establishment of one taxi association per district and further condemned the taxi violence in the Province which she said, frustrates the commuters and affects lives of ordinary citizens.

The Public Discourse was meant to encourage maximum participation of stakeholders as well as outline objectives of the Provincial Lekgotla.

Following today’s launch, the Department will resume with its District Taxi Makgotla which are set as buildups to the Provincial Taxi Lekgotla that will be followed by the National Taxi Lekgotla.
